Review: On the Line by Victoria Denault

Title: One The Line

Series: Hometown Players #5

Author: Victoria Denault

Format: E-book

He had total control of his game–until she changed all the rules . . .
As one of the best players in the NHL and the “golden boy” of the league, Avery Westwood knows he has to keep his cool–on and off the ice. His whole life is a carefully constructed image of perfection for the media and his brand sponsors. Of course, that means he can never let his true feelings show. But when it comes to the sexy sister of his former teammate, Avery might be willing to make an exception . . . even if it means breaking all his own rules.

As far as Stephanie Deveau is concerned, having a thing for Avery is the equivalent of psychological napalm. Très bad idea. Then he moves in next door, all sexy smiles and a deliciously hot body that she can’t resist. Something’s happening between them–it’s intense, a little (a lot) out of control, and real. Only Avery doesn’t know everything about Stephanie’s past. And the one exception to his rule might just be the one girl who could destroy his career.

**I received this book in return for an honest review through the publisher and NetGalley.**

On The Line brings us Avery Westwood who is the “Golden Boy” of the Hockey League, his only concern is the image he has going with the media. He works hard to maintain his perfect image, and he doesn’t let anything get in his way…Until he falls for Stephanie. Stephanie, is the sister of one of Avery’s teammates,  and completely off limits. Stephanie has had a long hard road to where she is now in life, she has had her struggles and overcome them. Avery and Stephanie have been friends for quite some time…however, after an evening spent at the wedding of mutual friends, and a moment in a small boat both seem to have not so friendly thoughts running through their mind. However, Stephanie knows she is no good for Avery’s image, and doesn’t want to be the cause of hurt so she moves on and distances herself from him. She relocated with her job and is doing well. That is until the Golden Boy of hockey relocates to her new city (who also happens to have the WORST hockey team in the league) and moves in next door. It is hard to resist the temptation that lies between them when they become fast friends all over again…but will the outcome be good for either one of them?

This was the first book I have read by Victoria Denault and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. I am normally a fan of sports romance anyway, because…hello yummy athletes! On The Line from Denault was no different. Not only am I fan of sports romance, the sister/ brothers friend relationship has always been one of my favorite tropes in romance novels, so that there is just a win-win for me. Thankfully, this book did not disappoint! For me the characters as well as the storyline held my attention. Throughout the book we watch both main characters overcome struggles in their lives… for Avery it is giving up the idea of his perfect image, and coming to terms with the fact that some things are more important. For Stephanie, it was coming to terms with her past and the idea that she is good enough. As the story goes on you come to route for Avery and Stephanie, you want them to put aside their differences and accept their love for each other. I enjoyed the unfolding of romance between Stephanie and Avery, it was romantic and steamy and still at some points frustrating and angering. There was a lot of built up angst and emotion in On The Line which I think is one of the things that made this book so enjoyable. I will be checking out more in this series and from Denault in the future!

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars
